Low mood? Low wellbeing?
You may have low serotonin. Here are a few ways to raise your happiness baseline.
Now before we get started, let’s make some distinctions between serotonin and dopamine. Dopamine is about wanting, anticipating, striving. It’s about movement towards another moment. Serotonin on the other hand is about loving THIS moment.
Dopamine = get me there. External pleasure. Serotonin = keep me here. Internal happiness.
Dopamine is always pursuing more dopamine. All serotonin wants is to bask in this moment.
So, how do we increase serotonin?
Firstly, we need to engage in things that ground us in the present moment.
A beautiful sunset.
A cup of tea in bed on a lazy Sunday.
Meditation.
Breathwork.
Yoga.
Gratitude and appreciation.
